Chapter 11 – Healing
The rest of the night was uneventful and I spent most of it fretting over my burns. After ushering the one-nighters back across the Under-Veil before sunrise, Rupert and I made our way off the bridge. I just silently ignored the siren's call of the bridge beckoning behind me the moment I set foot off of it.
I reached out experimentally as we walked and I was pleasantly surprised to find I could still feel it and I could tell everything that was happening on it, right down to how many birds were nested in it and how many sat along its cables and on the towers. I was so beyond exhausted.
Rupert just kept looking at me as we walked. Then he asked hesitantly, “Want to talk about it?”
I cocked an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”
He shrugged. “Well, you've been silent ever since uber-bitch left. What happened?”
I blinked a couple times. “Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't realize. I wasn't ignoring you. It was nothing.”
He shook his head sadly. “Damn mortals and your fear of emotions. Just admit it to yourself, for some unfathomable reason you have it bad for the ice princess. You were almost breaking your back trying to gain her approval while she kicked your ass all night.”
I pushed him into a signpost as we passed it. I mumbled, “Shut up.” I caught myself smiling slightly.
He started grumbling comically, “Why are women always so violent?”
Then we exchanged a shared grin and hit the pawn shop to sell the night's coins, then finished walking back to my place in a more comfortable silence. I took some aspirin for the throbbing pain in my hands and my face and the slight bruises from the beating I took at Sharee's hands.
After a long hot shower that felt heavenly I set my alarm and went to bed.
I awoke three hours later to the chiming of my alarm, still feeling exhausted, with Kyla sitting on the end of my bed. I squinted at her through bleary eyes. “Hi.”
She looked worried. “Don't hi me lady. Jesus, what did you do?” She took my hands in hers and looked at the burns on them then at my face. I blinked, the acid burns were only half as bad as just a few hours ago.
I shrugged. “Just ran into some unsavory characters last night. I'm up early to hit the free clinic this morning. What brings you by? You are supposed to be working.”
She shook her head at me in exasperation. “Rupe called me, said you needed someone to talk to. I got worried at that and came over. You're my best bud Evie. What's up?”
I smiled fondly at my best friend. I was tempted to tell her everything, but she'd just think I was crazy, she knew all about my schizophrenia. I didn't need her afraid of me. I shrugged. “Nothing.”
She squinted. “Hey, those are your beat puppy dog eyes! It's a girl! Ooooo spill chick! Tell Kyla all about it.”
I couldn't help but smile at her and I replied, “It's not a girl.
